Service members and military families are frequent targets for identity theft, especially during PCS moves, deployments, and major life transitions. One of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself is by freezing your credit.

A credit freeze prevents criminals from opening new accounts in your name. It’s free, takes only a few minutes to set up, and puts you in full control of who can access your credit.

What Is a Credit Freeze?

A credit freeze (also called a security freeze) blocks lenders from viewing your credit report unless you temporarily lift the freeze. If a criminal tries to apply for credit using your information, the request is automatically denied.

A credit freeze does not affect:

  • Your current credit accounts
  • Your credit score
  • Your ability to use existing credit

When you need to apply for credit yourself—such as a car loan, mortgage, or credit card—you can temporarily unfreeze your credit and lock it back down afterward.

Think of it as putting your financial records behind a locked door that only you control.

How to Freeze Your Credit

You must freeze your credit with all three major credit bureaus. The fastest way is online.

Experian

Equifax

TransUnion

You’ll need your name, address, date of birth, and Social Security number to complete the process.

Bottom Line

Freezing your credit is one of the easiest defensive moves you can make to protect yourself and your family. It costs nothing, takes minutes, and can save you from months, or years, of financial stress.

Lock it down. Stay protected.
