Graduating from Marine Corps Recruit Training is a milestone few ever reach. After weeks of discipline, endurance, and transformation, new Marines finally earn the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. But their journey doesn’t end at graduation. The next step is the School of Infantry (SOI), where Marines sharpen the combat fundamentals that define every Marine as a rifleman first.
What Is the School of Infantry?
The School of Infantry is where entry-level Marines transition from recruit to combat-ready warfighter. Every enlisted Marine reports to SOI:
- Infantry Marines (03XX) train at the Infantry Training Battalion (ITB).
- All non-infantry Marines attend Marine Combat Training (MCT).

Where Is SOI–East?
SOI–East is located at Camp Geiger, North Carolina, a satellite of Camp Lejeune on Marine Corps Air Station New River. Thousands of Marines pass through its gates each year to begin the next phase of their training.
Infantry Training Battalion (ITB)
For infantry Marines (03XX MOS)
Course length: Approximately 13 weeks
Training Includes:
- Marksmanship and weapons proficiency
- Patrolling and combat formations
- Land navigation
- Grenades and demolitions
- Squad weapon systems
- Tactical decision-making and field operations
Throughout ITB, Combat Instructors train, mentor, and evaluate Marines as they prepare for life in the Fleet Marine Force. After graduation, Marines report to their units ready for infantry service.
Marine Combat Training (MCT)
For all non-infantry Marines
Course length: Approximately 4 weeks
Training Includes:
- Rifle marksmanship
- Patrolling and maneuver
- Basic combat tactics
- Field skills and formations
MCT ensures that every Marine, regardless of MOS, remains a rifleman, prepared to fight if called upon.
Why SOI Matters
SOI pushes Marines to apply the discipline they built in boot camp to real-world combat skills. The pace is fast, the expectations are high, and the training builds confidence, in themselves, their abilities, and their fellow Marines.
For Families & Supporters
Your Marine may be out of boot camp, but they are still in a demanding training environment. Field time, long training days, and limited liberty mean phone access is inconsistent. Once again, letters often become the most reliable way to stay connected.
Every message from home is a reminder that their effort and commitment are seen and supported.
Communication at SOI–East
Because much of the training happens in the field, Marines may go days without using their phones. Families can continue sending letters and updates through Sandboxx, and the SOI–East mailing address is available here.

Base Access: All Marines and visitors must have a REAL ID or a valid CAC card. Gate access will not be granted without proper identification.

Uniform Requirements
Marines must report in their Service Alpha uniform with a fresh, regulation haircut. Changing in the parking lot is not authorized.

IMPORTANT: Prescription Glasses
If your Marine wears glasses, they are required to report to SOI-E with their USMC issued prescription glasses. This is a non-negotiable requirement, and Marines that forget their glasses could be held from training for several weeks.
