Delta Force’s ‘Bailey Blaster Door Charge’ blasted down more than its intended target

Marines breach door during raid

Moses “Blast” Bailey built an explosive door-blasting charge that fell apart in his hands.

He had just piled it up into a mess of a lump that he called his “Bailey Blaster Door Charge,” and was eager to see it in action.

Moses and I approached the breach door, he placed the charge at the door handle, and we retreated around the nearest corner from the door to escape the harmful effects of the blast.

In the end, when he turned to run around the house corner, the charge was hooked by his pistol holster, ripped from the door, and was carried back to the lineup of assault troops waiting to storm into the house. When the charge went off, Moses was blown into the air and hurt quite seriously. The rest of us gained only minor injuries from the blast.

To celebrate Moses’ recovery, I drew up a cartoon depicting Moses himself looking like the proper charge placed on the door in the correct firing configuration, waiting for the countdown, and I posted it in the squadron briefing room.

Moses ultimately earned himself a visit to the Delta Master Breacher, Charles Dexter “Bullet” Chaste, to explain his thought process behind the construction of the abominable breaching charge.

Suffice it to say, Chuck put out a bulletin to the whole Unit declaring no new charges would be authorized until they could be thoroughly investigated by the Unit’s breaching cell.

Around the same time, a new brother, Mark “Cos” S., joined our assault team.

His first deployment with us was to conduct urban combat operations. In that instance, the target city was New Orleans. His focus on this trip was to learn from Moses with the expectation that he would eventually take over his position as Team Breacher.

For a particular door breach during the operation, Cos was directly behind Moses. However, he was as clueless as Moses that the door charge had been stripped from the door and was in fact hanging on Moses’ pistol belt with its fuse cooking down.

When the charge exploded, Moses was cartwheeled in the air and driven down head-first on the ground. Cos’ trousers were shredded by the blast and he had more tiny bleeding wounds in both of his lower legs than we could count. When I hollered at him to get out his medical kit, he just looked at me with a stunned expression and didn’t move.

It was then that I glanced down and saw his shredded pants and bleeding legs… and kindly invited him to take a seat and relax while we attended to him and Moses both.

Moses had understandably been knocked unconscious by his dirt flip. The first thing he did upon regaining his senses was to argue with us about the blast going off on his hip. That was just Moses; he was a ferociously contrarian dude!

And yet it happened!

By Almighty God and with honor,
