Your Marine survived boot camp, and now they’re heading to the School of Infantry West (SOI-W) at Camp Pendleton, California. This next phase is where they transition from recruit to Marine, learning the skills and discipline that will define their career. As a family, understanding what happens at SOI-W and what your Marine needs to bring can make a real difference in how smoothly this transition goes.

What Is the School of Infantry?

SOI-W is the follow-on training every Marine attends after boot camp. It is a demanding, structured environment focused on building combat-ready Marines. What your Marine does at SOI-W depends on the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) they were assigned, which determines whether they attend MCT or ITB. The School of Infantry – West (SOI-West) is located at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, primarily in the 52 Area (San Onofre). It is situated near San Clemente and Oceanside, approximately 60 miles north of San Diego and 70 miles south of Los Angeles.

Marine Combat Training (MCT)

Who it’s for: Marines whose MOS is in a non-infantry field (such as administration, aviation, logistics, intelligence, and many others)

How long: Approximately 4 weeks

MCT is the path for the majority of Marines. Every Marine, regardless of job, is a rifleman first, and MCT is where that foundation is built. Your Marine will learn core combat skills including weapons handling, field operations, navigation, and small unit tactics. It is physically and mentally demanding, but it is designed to give every Marine a shared warfighting foundation no matter what their job will be.

After completing MCT, your Marine will move on to their MOS school to train specifically for their assigned career field.

Infantry Training Battalion (ITB)

Who it’s for: Marines whose MOS is 03XX (Infantry)

How long: Approximately 13 weeks

ITB is the path for Marines who will serve as infantrymen. It is longer, more intense, and more tactically advanced than MCT. These Marines will spend nearly two months mastering infantry-specific weapons, tactics, and combat skills that will be the core of everything they do throughout their career. ITB is one of the most physically and mentally demanding training pipelines in the Marine Corps.

If your Marine is an 03, ITB is where they truly become an infantryman.

Critical: What Your Marine Must Not Forget

This is the most important section of this blog. Before your Marine walks out the door, check these items together. Missing either of these can have serious consequences.

USMC-Issued Prescription Glasses If your Marine wears glasses, they must arrive at SOI-W with their USMC-issued prescription glasses. This is non-negotiable. Marines who arrive without them can be held from training for several weeks, delaying their progression and their path to their first duty station. Check for these before they leave.

All Uniforms Issued at Boot Camp. Every uniform issued at boot camp must make the trip to SOI-W. Missing uniforms are a significant problem and can cause similar delays. Go through the seabag together before departure and make sure everything is accounted for.

What to Bring Checklist

Help your Marine pack with this checklist before they depart:

  • All uniforms issued at boot camp ✓
  • USMC-issued prescription glasses (if applicable) ✓
  • One set of civilian clothing ✓
  • Cell phone (used for training materials and study resources) ✓
  • Cash or debit card — a minimum of $200 is recommended ✓

Staying Connected: What Families Need to Do

Staying connected during SOI-W requires a little preparation on the family’s end, but it makes a big difference.

Update Your Sandboxx Profile With Your Marine’s New Company. As soon as your Marine is assigned to their company at SOI-W, update your Sandboxx profile with their new unit information. This is an important step that ensures you are connected to the right company page and receiving the correct information throughout training. Do not skip this step.

Sandboxx Communities Updating your profile also gives you access to Sandboxx’s communities, where you can connect with other families going through the same experience. The support of people who truly understand what you are going through is invaluable, and knowing you are not alone makes the weeks ahead a little easier.

Weekly Family Updates Once your profile is updated, you will receive weekly updates giving you a general sense of where your Marine is in their training cycle and what they are working through. Read them, save them, and refer back to them when you have questions. These updates are one of the best tools you have for staying informed when direct communication with your Marine is limited.

Sending Mail is the most reliable and meaningful way to stay personally connected with your Marine during training. Letters and cards go a long way and remind your Marine that their family is behind them every step of the way. Be sure the mailing address you use reflects their current company assignment. Links for mailing addresses and additional resources are available below.

What Families Should Expect During Training

Phone contact will be limited and infrequent, especially early in the training cycle. There is no visitation during the training period. No news is generally good news; if there were a serious issue, the unit would contact you. Lean on the weekly updates to stay informed when you haven’t heard directly from your Marine.

A Note for Families

The weeks your Marine spends at SOI-W, whether in MCT or ITB, will be some of the most challenging of their life. But they are designed to build exactly the kind of Marine you will be proud of. Your role right now is one of preparation and encouragement. Help them leave home with everything they need, update your profile when they are assigned their company, and lean on the weekly updates to stay informed.
