Future Soldier—congratulations! You’ve already taken a huge step by enlisting in the United States Army, and Basic Training is almost here. But before you step on that bus, there’s one crucial task to check off your list: setting up your direct deposit. If you want to get paid (and we know you do), you’ll need to complete the SF 1199A Direct Deposit Sign-Up Form so your Army paycheck lands directly in your account—on time, every time.
What Is the SF 1199A?
The SF 1199A is the official form the Department of Defense uses to know exactly where to send your paycheck. No form = no pay on time. And the last thing you want to worry about during Basic Training is a missing paycheck.
What You’ll Need to Fill It Out
Before you sit down to complete your SF 1199A, make sure you have:
- Your bank routing number (9 digits)
- Your bank account number
- Type of account (checking or savings)
- A voided check OR a bank letter confirming your account details
- Your Social Security number
- Your signature
Pro Tip: If you’re under 18 or using a joint account, check with your recruiter for special instructions.
Step-by-Step: How to Complete the SF 1199A
- Get the Form from your recruiter or download it from the DFAS website.
- Section 1 – Payee Info: Fill in your full legal name, address, and phone number.
- Section 2 – Bank Info: Add your bank’s name, address, account type, routing number, and account number. Double-check for accuracy!
- Section 3 – Authorization: Sign and date the form.
- Bank Certification: Take the form to your bank to be certified, OR attach a voided check or official bank letter.
What to Do Once It’s Complete
Hand your completed form to your recruiter right away so it can be submitted with your enlistment paperwork. Done correctly, your first paycheck will arrive without delay. If you skip or mess up this step, you could be stuck waiting.
Pro Tips for Future Soldiers
