What Happens on Army Ship Day: A Step-by-Step Guide for Future Soldiers and Their Families

Ship Day is the moment your Future Soldier officially begins their Army journey, leaving home behind to take the first step toward earning the title of U.S. Army Soldier. From an early morning hotel check-out to final processing at MEPS, every step is designed to prepare them for Basic Training. Once they arrive at their training location, the transformation from civilian to Soldier begins under the guidance of Drill Sergeants. For families, it’s a day filled with pride and emotion—one best met with encouragement, letters, and the knowledge that this is just the beginning of something extraordinary.

The day has arrived—Ship Day.

This is the moment your Future Soldier officially begins their Army journey. It’s the day they leave the comforts of home behind and take their first step toward becoming a United States Army Soldier.

Whether you’re a Future Soldier preparing to ship or a family member getting ready to say “see you soon,” Ship Day is full of emotions, uncertainty, and pride. To help ease the nerves and prepare you for what to expect, here’s a step-by-step guide to what happens on Ship Day—from wake-up to wheels up.

Step 1: Early Morning Hotel Check-Out

The night before Ship Day, most Future Soldiers stay at a hotel near their Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS), arranged and paid for by the Army. These hotels are often shared with other recruits heading to different branches of service.

In the early morning—usually between 4:00 and 5:00 AM—your Soldier will:

  • Wake up early
  • Eat a quick breakfast (usually provided by the hotel or MEPS)
  • Check out and head to MEPS via transportation organized by the Army

No cell phone use is allowed beyond this point. It’s officially time to focus.

Step 2: Final MEPS Processing

At MEPS, Future Soldiers will go through final processing, including:

  • Verifying personal information and enlistment contract
  • Taking a final health check (weight, vitals)
  • Confirming job selection and duty station
  • Reviewing and signing final paperwork
  • Receiving travel documents (orders, tickets)

This is also when they may make one last quick phone call to their family—usually just a minute or two to say, “I’m about to leave. I love you.”

It’s short, but meaningful.

Step 3: Travel to Basic Training

Once processing is complete, it’s time to depart for Basic Combat Training (BCT).

Depending on their training location (Fort Benning, Fort Jackson, Fort Sill, Fort Leonard Wood, etc.), your Soldier will travel by bus, plane, or both. Transportation is completely arranged and covered by the Army.

They’ll usually travel with a group of other new Soldiers heading to the same destination, escorted by a liaison or military personnel.

Step 4: Arrival at Basic Training—The Real Beginning

Once they arrive at the training location, everything shifts into high gear. This is where the Army journey truly begins.

Upon arrival, your Soldier will:

  • Be greeted by Drill Sergeants—usually with intensity and structure
  • Receive instructions and guidance on the first steps of in-processing
  • Begin “Reception Week,” a multi-day process before basic training officially begins
  • Have their phones taken and stored—they won’t have regular access from this point on
  • Get assigned a roster number, clothing, gear, and haircut
  • Start the transformation from civilian to Soldier

Most Soldiers are allowed to send a quick scripted call within the first 72 hours to confirm arrival. It usually sounds like this:

“Hi, I’ve arrived safely at Fort Jackson. I’ll send my address as soon as I can. I’ll write when I can. I love you.”

It’s brief, but it lets you know they made it.

What You Can Do as a Family Member

Ship Day is emotional for everyone. Here’s how to support your Soldier and yourself:

  • Stay positive and encouraging. They’re nervous—and excited—and your energy matters.
  • Let them lead the goodbye. Some want hugs. Some want space. Respect their process.
  • Start writing letters. As soon as you get their address, letters become their lifeline.
