The U.S. Army’s General Orders are more than just memorized lines—they’re the backbone of a Soldier’s duty, discipline, and conduct. Whether you’re on guard duty, in Basic Combat Training, or years into your service, these orders are non-negotiable rules that guide your actions at all times. They ensure every Soldier knows exactly what’s expected, even without direct supervision.
Why General Orders Matter
In the Army, discipline isn’t just enforced—it’s lived. General Orders provide a universal standard that every Soldier follows, no matter their rank or assignment. They make sure tasks are carried out consistently, keep Soldiers mission-focused, and protect both people and property. Knowing them isn’t just a box to check—it’s part of earning the right to wear the uniform.
The Three General Orders
The Army’s General Orders are simple, but powerful:
- I will guard everything within the limits of my post and quit my post only when properly relieved.
- This means you are responsible for everything in your assigned area. You do not leave until someone officially replaces you.
- I will obey my special orders and perform all my duties in a military manner.
- Follow specific instructions for your post exactly as they are given, and conduct yourself with professionalism and discipline at all times.
- I will report violations of my special orders, emergencies, and anything not covered in my instructions to the commander of the relief.
- If something happens that isn’t in your orders, you speak up immediately. Safety, security, and accountability come first.
How You’ll Learn Them in Basic Training
From your first days at Reception Battalion, Drill Sergeants will expect you to memorize and recite these orders word-for-word. But more importantly, they’ll teach you to live them:
- Standing guard during field exercises
- Keeping accountability for equipment and personnel
- Reacting quickly and correctly in emergencies
Knowing the words is step one—understanding and applying them is where real professionalism starts.
Real-Life Applications Beyond Basic
While the General Orders are most commonly associated with guard duty, they influence every part of Army life:
- Leadership: Setting the example for others to follow.
- Readiness: Staying alert and prepared for the unexpected.
- Integrity: Doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
Whether you’re deployed overseas or at your home station, the mindset behind these orders will guide your actions.
Last Call: Your First Step in Becoming a Soldier
The General Orders are one of the first things you’ll commit to memory in the Army—and one of the last things you’ll ever forget. They’re short, direct, and timeless, forming the core of what it means to stand post with honor.
If you start learning them before you ship to Basic, you’ll have a head start on one of the Army’s most important traditions—and you’ll be one step closer to showing your Drill Sergeants that you’re ready for the responsibility ahead.
I’ll be back next week with more tips and guidance. Until then, Hooah!
