Ever wonder who would win a drag race between an F-35 and a 1,000+ horsepower hyper car?
The UK TV show “Top Gear” is no stranger to racing exotic cars in unusual ways. Years ago, the old guard (that’s now moved on to Amazon’s “Grand Tour”) pitted a Bugatti Veyron against a Eurofighter Typhoon, with the fighter jet stealing the win despite an impressive performance from the turbocharged 16-cylinder hyper car.
Now, the new hosts of the BBC’s “Top Gear” are staging a drag race of their own… this time pitting a Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter against a 1,036 horsepower Mclaren Speedtail.
Of course, the F-35 would obviously win in a top speed contest thanks to it’s ability to reach a blistering Mach 1.6 (right around 1,200 miles per hour) but the Mclaren is no slouch as far as cars go. With a top speed of around 255 miles per hour, you’ll be hard pressed to find anything on four wheels that can keep pace… and that’s actually also faster than a number of airplanes can fly–likes the Cessna 172. As the preview of the race shows, the drag race between the F-35 and Mclaren starts with the hyper car stealing an early lead, that is, until the fighter jet takes off.
It stands to reason that this race will unfold quite a bit like the last fighter jet drag race held by “Top Gear,” which will mean the two vehicles will have to reach a turnaround point and make it all the way back to the start. That’s where the the McLaren could potentially steal the win in this fighter jet drag race–as capable as the F-35 may be, it still can’t turn on a dime.
The Mclaren Speedtail will start reaching wealthy owners later this month, and comes with a price tag of right around $2.2 million. Of course, this may be the only drag race where its opponent actually costs more–with the F-35 ringing it at around $90 million a piece.
Something tells me they’re not racing for pink slips here.
