Earlier this year, Sandboxx News launched our first web series, AirPower with Alex Hollings, and as the guy with his name is in the title, I genuinely couldn’t be more blown away by the responses we’ve received. Clearly, YouTube has a special place in its heart for military aviation, and I feel awfully lucky to get to be a part of that passion.

When we uploaded my first AirPower video in March, outlining the reasons the United States Air Force opted to order new F-15s rather than adding more F-35s, I expected it to languish in the nether-realms of YouTube content, waiting to be discovered on some far off date, after I finally figured out what I was doing and somehow managed to garner a small but interested audience.

Instead, it quickly garnered tens of thousands of views… and I panicked.

I watch YouTube like my parents watched cable. I consume educational content like it’s my job (it sort of is), stay up late watching MrBallen tell spooky stories, and pour over videos from friends and creators like Jack Murphy, Ward Carroll, and Hasard Lee. I came up in the YouTube era of service, where we found commonalities among Marines watching classic videos like “The EAS Song.” But despite my affinity for the platform and its creators… I never expected to find a home among them. I’m a writer. I don’t have any idea of how to put together a video.

But after 9 months of writing, recording, and editing some 45 videos, racking up more than 16 million views, and adding tens of thousands of subscribers… I can now honestly say that I still have no idea what I’m doing… but I’m having a blast figuring it out.
