If you’re a fan of Viking films and television shows, then this year’s Vikings: Valhalla will certainly pique your interest, and not just if you are a believer in “the old ways”… like me.
Valhalla is set about 125 years after the original Vikings series. There is naturally a new cast of characters, many of whom are based on actual historical figures. Although, like many historical dramas, the writers play with dates and facts and change them to suit the storytelling.
The executive producer of the new series, Michael Hirst, was the writer of and producer for all 89 episodes of Vikings. He’s not doing any of the writing for this series thus far but is working closely with writer Jeb Stuart.
Watching the original Vikings isn’t necessary to enjoy this new series. Yes, many of the characters from the original show are mentioned, but besides that, you won’t be left in the dark as Hirst and Stuart are intent on building a whole new set of characters with their own stories and struggles.
Stuart wastes no time in setting the stage for the slaughter that is about to begin.
The Danes muster an army to invade England
The England of Valhalla is vastly different from the one in Vikings or The Last Kingdom. In Valhalla, many of the Norse have converted to Christianity, and that will be a central point of conflict between the Norse themselves as the story plays out.
The famous explorer Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), the son of the famous Viking berserker, Eric the Red, is seen at the beginning of episode 1 piloting his ship in a huge storm, coming from Greenland to Kattegat with his sister Freydis (Frida Gustavsson) intent on finding a mysterious person.
Leif and the Greenlanders find Kattegat filled with Vikings comprising a huge army under the command of King Canute of Denmark (Bradley Freegard). Canute is gathering an army to attack London and kill the English king for ordering the slaughter of the Danes on St. Brice’s Day Massacre. The St. Brice’s Day Massacre was an actual event that occurred in 1002 when King Æthelred of England ordered the extermination of the Danish Norse who had settled peacefully in England.

The massacre drives the Vikings, both Christian and pagan, to swear revenge upon Æthelred and England, but not before the alliance of many Norse chieftains almost unravels because of religious differences.
The Danes are drawn together by Prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) and they are off to England joined by Leif.
Once the action moves to England, the viewers are introduced to the strong Queen Emma (Laura Berlin), Prince Edmund (Louis Davison), Canute’s father Sweyn Forkbeard (Søren Pilmark), and Earl Godwin (David Oakes).
Forkbeard steals every scene he is in. He’s a warrior at heart and suffers no disrespect, real or imagined. He generates fear from all around him, and Pilmark pulls it off perfectly. He doesn’t trust anyone until they prove their mettle.

‘Vikings: Valhalla’ delivers fast and savage action
The characters are all interesting and the acting is first-rate. The main characters, Leif, Freydis, and Harald, have excellent on-screen chemistry. Many of the viewers were upset with the inclusion of Caroline Henderson as Jarl Haakon, ruler of Kattegat. Her character is based on Haakon Ericsson, Earl of Lade and governor of Norway.
In the show, they pass off the gender swap by explaining that her husband was killed. But the big complaint was that Jarl Haakon is an African-American when there were none there at the time. Of course, the show’s creators took some factual liberties, but it doesn’t take away from the story, IMHO.
The action is fast, savage, and, as in Vikings, raucous and bounces back and forth among several locations that all tie together in the story. The sets from Kattegat and Upsala, are from the original Vikings show. And also, like the original, the cinematography lends a beautiful backdrop to the story.
Netflix felt so good about this show that it approved an initial three seasons. Season 2 is already filmed, and the producers have released a teaser:
If you were a Vikings fan (I liked The Last Kingdom more), then you will definitely enjoy this series.
