PCS season is always a stressful time, but with the turmoil of 2020 bleeding over this deep into 2021, this may be one of the toughest years yet for service members planning to execute a DITY move to their next duty station.
PCSgrades and Shyft, two organizations that specialize in helping you move from your current home to your next, want to help. This year, they’ve partnered up for a contest that will provide two grand-prize winners with free full-service DITY moves, including the packing, transportation, and unloading of all your household goods at your destination (provided your start and endpoints are both inside the United States).
Six other winners will receive gift cards to The Home Depot ranging from $500 to $1,000 to help cover moving essentials, or maybe just to buy yourself a nice housewarming gift. After all, I’m currently packing up my house for a move to a new home a few states away, and I can’t think of a better way to decorate our new garage than with a few new power tools… But you may need to talk that part over with your spouse.
How do you enter to win a free DITY move from PCSgrades and Shyft?
Entering the contest is pretty easy — just head over to the PCSgrades website and create an account (you can even just log in using your existing Google or Facebook accounts if you’d prefer). Once you’re in, just leave a review for the housing you’re currently in or any of the services available for review on their site (real estate agents, mortgage lenders, moving companies, and more). In your review, make sure to share your most memorable PCS story — that’s what the judges will use to choose their winners.
You must be an active duty service member or military spouse (including full-time guard and reserve) and at least 18-years-old to enter. You can even enter more than once by adding more reviews and great PCS stories!
All entries must be in by Tuesday, August 31 and winners will be chosen on or right around September 15. The two grand prize winners must complete their move by March 15 of next year (2022), but you can enter to win a gift card even if you’ve recently finished a move. Gift card winners just need to have moved within the 6 months prior to winner selection or have a move scheduled in the six months that follows.
You can read all the rules of entry on the PCSgrades website here.
What is a DITY move?
Like so many things in the military, the DITY in DITY move is actually an acronym (surprise!). It stands for Do-It-Yourself Move, but you may also see the acronym PPM, for Personally Procured Move, used interchangeably. Put simply, a DITY move is when you take care of the move yourself, rather than having the military (TMO) handle it for you.
The military provides you with the funding to execute the move, rather than a moving company. Many military families choose to go the DITY move route because it gives you a bit more freedom and, of course, the opportunity to handle some things yourself and save some of that cash Uncle Sam would have otherwise handed to movers.
