Let’s Pack: Getting Ready for Basic Training

Packing for Army Basic Training isn’t just about zipping up a duffel—it’s about preparing with confidence, clarity, and the unwavering reminder that you are stepping into this journey ready and prepared. It’s not about quantity—it’s about purpose.

Right now, you’re preparing to ship out to Army Basic Training—and whether you’re feeling proud, nervous, excited, or all of the above—you’ve got a mission: pack smart, light, and with purpose.

This isn’t summer camp. It’s Basic Combat Training—the first major step in transforming you into a Soldier. And while the Army will issue nearly everything you need, showing up with the right essentials—and only the essentials—sets the tone for success from the moment they arrive. So let’s break it down.

The Golden Rule: Pack Light, Pack Smart

If it’s not on the packing list, don’t bring it. Anything unnecessary will either be confiscated or mailed back home. Keep it simple. One small, sturdy bag—like a backpack or duffel—is all you’ll need.

Must-Have Documents
No ID? No entry. Help them double check these items:

  • Driver’s license or state ID (must be a REAL ID)
  • Social Security card (original or certified copy)
  • Bank routing/account number for direct deposit and Debit Card
  • SF1199 Direct Deposit Form (if applicable)

What to Wear
They should show up dressed for function, not fashion:

  • Casual, comfortable shirt or blouse (no obscene graphics, no halters or cutoffs)
  • Slacks or jeans (no shorts)
  • Underwear (full coverage—no thongs)
  • Comfortable walking shoes (no heels, flip-flops, or sandals)
  • Eyeglasses if prescribed (no contact lenses)

For Males:

  • 2–3 pairs of white or black crew socks (no logos)
  • 2 extra pairs of underwear

For Females:

  • 2–3 pairs of underwear (white, black, or neutral—briefs only)
  • 2 Sports bras (white, black, or neutral)
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Running shoes (if recruiter approves)

Toiletries (Travel-Size Only)

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Deodorant (non-aerosol)
  • Manual razor
  • Comb or brush
  • Shampoo, soap, or body wash
  • Small towel or washcloth
  • Neutral-colored hair ties (for females)

Extras (If Allowed)

  • Debit card or up to $50 in cash
  • Stationery and stamps
  • Small Bible or religious text (optional)

What Not to Bring
Some things are better left at home—no matter how well-meaning:

  • Weapons (even pocketknives)
  • Tobacco or vaping products
  • Alcohol
  • Supplements or OTC meds
  • Electronics (phones, smartwatches, earbuds)
  • Jewelry (except a simple wedding band)
  • Makeup, extra clothing, or food

Pro Tips from the Community

  • Use a checklist—we can help with that.
  • Keep documents in a secure folder for easy access during in-processing.
  • Tuck in a handwritten note or photo—small gestures go a long way.
  • Still unsure? Ask the recruiter. They’re your best source for up-to-date guidance.

You’re Not Just Packing a Bag—You’re Packing Confidence

What you do in these final days matters. It says, “I’m ready.” When you’re organized, focused, and prepared, you’ll have one less thing to worry about—and one more reason to keep pushing forward.

This journey is big. It’s bold. And it begins with a simple backpack filled with just the right gear—and a whole lot of heart.

Let’s pack it with purpose. Hooah!
